February 2024 Newsletter

I filmed this month’s Video Tip Clip the day before January’s big snow storm. Of course, with such mild winter temps ahead of us now in the 10-day forecast, the timing of this advice couldn’t be better! If you’d like to read my Ford Performance article about the history of Old Lincoln Highway, click here. And if you’d like to learn more about (or simply order a copy of) my UNBRIDLED book, click here, or scroll to the bottom of this newsletter.

I hate treadmills - but I love success! Let me explain: As mentioned in my video (above), I’m always looking for a chance to run outside rather than on a treadmill. Don’t get me wrong; we have one in our basement, it gets used daily by our clients, and I log plenty of hours on it every winter. That being said; the second the weather allows that I can get back outside - I’m there! I love the fresh air, sights, sounds, and even smells that make every outdoor run different. To me, there’s nothing worse than being cooped up in one place.

To that point, it’s a bit ironic that I voluntarily spent so much time sitting essentially motionless in front of my computer for 3.5 years writing my UNBRIDLED book! Of course, I’ve sat down to write this newsletter (most) every month since 2008, but this only ever takes me an hour or less. What’s more, is that even having completed the book this past summer, I still managed to spend a frustrating number of hours right back in the same desk chair, staring at the same computer screen all over again. Why? Because as Certified Personal Trainers, the National Academy of Sports Medicine requires that we complete a certain number of Continuing Education Credit units/hours every two years to maintain current credentials.

Kristin and I have been CPTs since 2004 (me) and 2005 (her), so this process is nothing new to us. Mercifully, we’re at least allowed to pick whichever course we’d like from a decent variety of options. Past recertification specializations that we’ve selected have included Weight Loss Specialist, Fitness Nutrition Specialist, Performance Enhancement Specialist, Corrective Exercise Specialist, Behavior Change Specialist, and so on. This time, however, I seized the opportunity to sign up for one of their newest courses, one that ties in directly with what originally inspired me to quit Porsche and become a trainer - Bodybuilding!

I first watched PUMPING IRON in 2003. Watching (a then 28-year-old) Arnold Schwarzenegger, Lou Ferrigno (who Kristin and I would eventually have dinner with in May 2009), and other IFBB pros competing for the 1975 Mr. Universe and Mr. Olympia titles literally changed my life. If I hadn’t watched that film, I almost certainly wouldn’t be here typing this newsletter with nearly 20 years and an estimated 31,000 personal training sessions serviced under my proverbial belt. In fact, for those of you who weren’t training with us at the time, I ended up competing in three NANBF (natural) bodybuilding shows throughout 2010 and 2011.

This is getting long - and I still haven’t really made my point. Sorry! My point is that, as much as I hate sitting down and doing these courses ever couple of years - I do love success, and I’m happy to report my successful completion of NASM’s Physique & Bodybuilding Coach course this past weekend. I’m glad to stay current so Kristin and I can continue to offer YOU the best service based on the latest and greatest scientifically-backed consensus. Given, most of you are more interested in trimming down rather than bulking up, but fat loss is a major goal in bodybuilding (second only to muscular hypertrophy), so some of the info in this course may benefit you directly!

And what do I plan to do with the rest of that info? Believe it or not, I plan to put it to the best use possible. I’ve officially made it my goal to compete again in the summer of 2026. I’ll be 45 by that time, and it will have been 15 years since my last time on stage. So, keep your eyes peeled. Over these next two years, you should notice me gradually growing, and by January ‘26 I’ll be joining the New Years’ rush of folks looking to drop a few inches off my waist - before slathering on the fake tanner one last time!

Yours in health,

This month’s healthy recipe doesn’t require any fancy instructions and, frankly, I’m not going to bother with listing the macros either. This month I’m just going to address Valentine’s candy (and obviously make a simple suggestion). If you or your special someone just resolved to lose weight in January; why would you give each other a bunch of crap candy already in February? If you really love AND SUPPORT each other, give each other something sweet - but healthy!!! Honestly, I’m a chocolate/peanut butter addict, but I’d still rather have some delicious chocolate covered strawberries any day of the week. So, this Valentine’s Day, get crafty and try writing cute little messages on delicious AND NUTRITIOUS berries instead of just giving those terrible little Valentine message candies. Your loved one will likely appreciate your effort - and you know they’ll taste good!

See you next month!
