July Video Tip Clip: Ready for Something New?

We all have our routines. Routines are comfortable. But when it comes to exercise, routines aren’t always the most productive! Kristin broke out of her routine, signed up for two triathlons, and lost weight in the process. So if you’re ready to try something new, give us a shout and schedule your free consultation today!

The Power of Competition

Two years ago Matt Damon and Christian Bale starred in the movie Ford v. Ferrari. The movie chronicled the contentious rivalry between the two motor companies at Le Mans, during the mid to late 1960s. Obviously, their intense competition not only netted Ford four consecutive wins at the famous French race - it became the stuff of legend.

It’s often said that competition drives innovation, but it can go far beyond that. Having been a professional trainer for 17 years now, I’ve come to realize that setting a specific and unwavering date for the achievement of your goals greatly enhances your chances of actually accomplishing them. This is why I love training brides in advance of their weddings. They always want to look their best - and that date is not moving! So, they work hard, and end up looking great!

So what happens if you take that ideal scenario of having set a specific goal achievement date, and add an element of competition to it? What happens is, you become more likely than ever to realize your greatest potential! I experienced this a decade ago as I prepared for each of my natural bodybuilding competitions in the NANBF. Knowing I’d be on that stage, under those lights, nearly naked - and being judged against other men on either side of me - there was no way I was going to cheat on my diet. There was no way I wasn’t going to give it my all, every day in the gym. Did I take first place? No, only third. But, I managed to get bigger, leaner, and better every time, and ultimately got into the best shape of my life!

I’m also observing the same phenomenon with my beautiful wife, Kristin. Having played basketball in high school, softball in college, and winning the IBPA State and National Power Lifting Championships in 2011, Kristin recently decided to take on a new challenge - triathlons! Last month, she competed in her first, the Omaha Women’s Triathlon, on June 5th. On the 18th of this month, she’ll be competing again, this time in the Omaha Triathlon at Standing Bear Lake. Compared to last month’s Super Sprint, this month’s Sprint triathlon will challenge her (and her competitors) with a course that’s roughly double the distances she swam, biked, and ran last time! I know she’ll do great, because I’ve watched her get up early to train before the heat of the day, prepare healthier meals, and go to bed early so she can do it all again the next day!

Time and time again, in sports and business alike, competition has proven to push people of all ages, races, genders, etc… to do their best. So if you want to look better, feel better, or perform better - challenge yourself and reap the benefits thanks to the power of competition!

Carrot Cake Energy Bars

Ingredients

  • 3/4 cup (75g) rolled oats

  • 1/2 cup (60g) slivered almonds

  • 1/2 cup (57g) walnut pieces

  • 3/4 cup (60g) carrots, grated and patted dry with paper towels

  • 3/4 cup (125g) pitted Medjool dates

  • 1/2 cup (30g) toasted dried coconut chips (such as Dang)

  • 1/4 cup (55g) dried pineapple pieces

  • 2 teaspoons orange zest, finely grated

  • 1 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon

  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

  • 1/4 teaspoon salt

Directions

Preheat oven to 350°F (180ºC). Place the oats, almonds and walnuts on a rimmed baking sheet and bake until lightly toasted, 10 minutes. Set aside and allow the mixture to cool.

Put the carrots, dates, coconut, pineapple, orange zest, cinnamon, vanilla and salt in a food processor and pulse until the mixture is well chopped and forms a ball, about 30 1-second pulses. Add the oats and nut mixture and process, stopping to scrape down the sides of the bowl once or twice, until the nuts are finely ground, 2 minutes.

Line a 5-by-9-inch (13-by-23-cm) loaf pan with plastic wrap. Press the date mixture into the pan evenly. Cover and refrigerate until the mixture is firm to the touch, about 2 hours. Cut into 8 bars and wrap individually in plastic wrap. Store the bars in the refrigerator for up to 2 weeks.
