What to Do When Life Throws You a Curveball

Congratulations, you made it through January! While your gym is probably still busier than normal, chances are it’s already not quite as busy as it was a couple of weeks ago. Some folks have already given up on their New Year’s resolutions - but that’s not you! (Or maybe it is - in which case you need to call us!) So good job with that. I applaud your dedication!

What happens, though, when life legitimately throws you a curveball? I’ve had a few thrown at me lately. Last month, of course, I wrote about recovering from injuries (my MRI indicated that my next virtue I need to work on is patience) and, while those certainly count as curveballs, there are plenty of other examples. Take for instance, a family emergency: Two weekends ago, I woke up to a panicked phone call from one of my sisters. Our youngest sibling was being rushed to the hospital! As you can guess, it was a particularly serious situation. All my plans went out the window, and within a few minutes I was rushing out the door to Milwaukee!

I won’t leave you in suspense. It all turned out fine. After a few days of intense prayer and modern medical intervention, she was able to be discharged - and our entire family is relieved and thankful for it! My advice pertains, however, to my retrospective takeaway of one thing I should have packed before leaving. Had I not been so panicked, I should have packed my TRX suspension trainer. If you haven’t used one, you should (in fact, we’d be happy to teach you). These simple straps stow in a small mesh bag that can easily fit inside your luggage and can conveniently mount in the top of most any doorframe - turning nearly any room into your on-the-go gym!

Because I rushed out so quickly, I missed an entire week of training. What’s more, I could’ve used the exercise as stress relief. But I guess that’s how you live and learn. So try to keep this advice in mind next time life throws you a curveball. Even in today’s inflation-ravaged dollars, you can still acquire one of these handy trainers for under $200. Frankly, it’s probably the best bang for you fitness buck out there!
